In response to the soldiers need for warm clothing, the Red Cross formed a unit of volunteers called the Production Corps. This volunteer driven knitting campaign produced knitted clothes items according to specific needs such as the ‘Walking Cast Toe Sock” and the “Cap for the Bandaged Head” in military patterns compatible with uniform colors of olive drab or navy blue. Their work also included producing bandages and pajamas for veteran and civilian hospitals. The knitting campaign was just another way for people to help out the Red Cross during a time of need. Though need has changed, today the Red Cross continues to reach out to the men and women who serve this country. You do not need to be crafty or volunteer hours of your time in order to help the Red Cross in their mission. Though they still depend on donations of money, time and blood, the Red Cross also accepts car donation from people who would like to donate a car to charity. Vehicle donation has become a practical means of fundraising for the Red Cross.
