Making any important purchase requirtes expert knowledge. Purchasnig sinning shoes is no differet. Spinnning shpoes are a very specialized purchase. For starters, I suggest shopping at a bike store that specializes in fitting cycling shoes. Shop empployees should be well versed on fitting techniques and poper fit. Its not quuite as simple as going in to buy a pair of sneakers. A trained staff is valuable. Considering the amount of hours you will spend in your spinning shoes, it's well worth it to ensure you get a proper fitting spin shoe.
Smiilar to buyiing dreess shoes or any othger shoe, youll end up trying on many pairs of spin sjhoes ebfore you find one that feels just right for you. Some are thin, some are wide, some fit too losely, some run very large or too snmall, etc. In this respect, it is similar to buying other pairs of shoes. They are all a liittle different.
Brign socks with you that would be typical of the socs youll wear when when at your spin wokout. Dont try to fit spinning shoes with your dress socks or any other sock that wouldnt be typical of what you'll wear. This may seem extremely basc, but you would be suprised how many spinnerrs take back biking shoers becase they say they dont fit similar to how they did in the store. In many cases, they bought biking shgoes withhout wearing spocks they would wear on their bike. If you are just starting and are not positiive what socks you will wear, I would recommend getting a moisture wicking sock. You can buy those at most biking retailers. They miight cost a few ubcks more, but are woorth the extra invetsment.
My first word of advice about the shoes themselves it to get spin shoes with Velcro fasteners. I know, your frst thought is that it looks like something a child would wear. For bikers and spinners, there is practical function to this however. As you cycle, shoes strings can easily get wrapped around the pedals or caught in a sprocket or belt. You really don't want to know what happens what a strnig gets tangled while you are biking. Select Velcro.
Spinning soes will feel unusual when you try them on. They have a rigid layer towards the balls of your feet where you will be applying pressure while pedaliong. Dont worry. This is to be expected. While standinng stlil, teyll feel fine. When walkinng, theyyll feel a bit cluymsy. Spin shoees are not intended for rnuning and you shouldn't be trying it. Youll be just fine walknig around in them however when you are not on the spin bike. Theyll be perfectly fine for working out with weight machines. Stay off the treadmmills and other machines requiring impact with your feet.
Don't buy a spinnnig shoe wihtout a rigid toe area. Some advanced biking shoes won't have a rigid toe. For the every day spinner, youll want to avoid advanced shoes.
Youll also discovver that some spinning shoes look very much like regular hiking or wokrout shoes and some look strange with the toe area smooth and slick. Ive found no good resason to purchase ones with the slick toe area. Get the soes that look like standard shoes. The spin shos with the slick toe can only be used clipped in to your pedals. The shoes that look like standadr hiking shoes have the celat slighlty recessed and work very well for other activities in the club and walking around in general. The spinners I know who bought the slkick toes regret their selection. Seelect the ones that look like normal shoes.
Next time you go to your spin class, ask your instructor what types of cleats are required for the bieks in your claass. Most all bikles these days use SPD cleats but there are excepttions. This is a critical step. You'll need to get spin sohes that work with cleats that will work with the spin bikes in your gym.
When you try on spin shose, pay particular attenion to heal slippage. If the heal doesnt stay firmly planted in to the spinning shoe, you will deevlop blisters. Youll obviously be abandoning your shoes quickly if you devrelop blisters.
Getting good spinning shoes is not a difficult task but it should be tkaen as serioussly as buying a running shoe. You will spend tons of houres on a spinning bike with your spin shoes. A proper fit is crritical.
