Fire protection programs deem the importance of fire prevention above anything. But there are instances when the unfortunate occurs even with utmost prevention. Hence, it is basic that establishments have fire fighting equipment because this shall keep the worst from happening in case of an impending disaster.

The importance of observance of building codes upon construction is basic because a poorly engineered establishment structure will pose great hazard during cases of emergency. Also buildings that have not been structured appropriately may not be able to resist being totally consumed by a ravaging fire.

However, the precaution does not lie upon the engineering of the establishment because a fire secure building limits damage but does not necessarily prevent onset of fire due to recklessness. This is when the organization, the group of people and workers within the building, comes in importance. The most important part of any fire safety measure is the people that observe it. In this concern, it is important to see the following aspects:

1. Information and education

It seems as though many do not understand how fire is generated and this is due to ignorance and lack of proper education. Indeed, little is taught in schools about fire accidents. Drills have been happening here and there, sparsely. How many employees do you think know about fire accidents? One can come up with scarce numbers. This is alarming because without proper information, without the equipment of knowledge, unmitigated disaster is at hand. Regular training and seminars must be done to aid people in understanding the causes of fire accidents and the importance of all safety precautions that must be stringently followed.

2. Installation of industrial fire fighting equipment

Why is there a need to explain this? The essentiality of having fire safety and fighting equipment at hand is incontrovertible. Fire extinguishers installed at different corners is basic. However, another more pressing concern is the preparedness of people in the vicinity. Even with the presence adequate fire extinguishers, if people tend to panic more than do something, the objectives and principles of fire prevention is forfeited. Hence, we go back to the necessity of fire safety training and drills. Employees should be taught how to use fire extinguishers. The more important thing is to inform them when and when not to proceed to an affected area. Some flames are more hazardous than others and if a person is imprudent during this instance, he could be putting his life in danger. Furthermore, there are different kinds of fire, each of which is caused by a particular class of combustibles and can only be put out by a specific kind of extinguisher.

3. Regular monitoring and assessment

Generally, there are areas within an establishment that are more susceptible to fire accidents. Laboratories, chemical storage areas, production areas, among others are more prone to these accidents than any other zones. An assigned personnel must do regular check-ups in the facility to pin down potential hazards.

As much as there is effort to lessen the likelihood of loss of lives and properties, prevention of injury is another important thing. First-aid kit should be at hand and an experienced personnel must be able to attend to burn victims, while at the same time urgent medical help must be sought. It is imperative that everyone knows the emergency numbers to contact during these instances.

Part of fire safety planning is the establishment of smoke alarms that come as the battery-operated or the wireless version. Make sure these gas detection equipments work properly or they will serve no good during emergency situations. Prevention is so much better than fire fighting. All people should work together to avoid the unthinkable from happening. Note that a huge fire actually starts from small flickers or sparks, mistakenly regarded as a minute problem, which occur as a result of thoughtlessness.
