Though Goodwill® is known for its work with the disabled and disadvantaged community, disadvantages include life changing traumatic events. The loss of her twenty-six year old son was just that for Joann Santos. After her son was murdered, Santos was lost, unable to work and function. For a time she lived with her son in California and collected disability, unable to figure out where to go from there. She eventually returned to Phoenix and found the Central Arizona chapter of Goodwill®. Through Goodwill® she obtained computer and customer service training courses and within weeks felt her self esteem returning. Goodwill’s® training resulted in their creating a clerical support assistant position for her in their workforce development department. Santos credits her experience in many challenging positions with helping her overcome much and it’s this experience that she feels will help her to help others who have gone through what she has gone through. Goodwill® not only trains those who have suffered a life changing traumatic event but often places them in positions within Goodwill®. In order to continue offering their training and employment placement Goodwill® works with car donation. When you donate a car to Goodwill®, you are making it possible for Goodwill® to offer employment opportunities to the people they help. Vehicle donation has become an important source of funding for Goodwill®.
