On Saturday, Norwich residents flocked to a winter coat giveaway sponsored by Easter Seals Goodwill® and AmeriChoice by United Healthcare. The two groups worked together to collect close to a thousand donated coats and then went a step further, purchasing hats and scarves to go with the coat donations. Residents in need of coats were lined up outside the store hours before the event began. As their parents searched for coats in the right size, children were entertained by costumed characters, crafts and face painting. The giveaway was a blessing for families in need of warm winter coats as the cold weather begins to creep upon them. Surprised by the steady crowds the event drew, the groups hope to organize a similar event next year. Though Goodwill® is known for collecting and distributing clothing, car donation is overlooked when it comes to event planning, despite the fact that Goodwill® needs people who can donate a car to charity. Just as people’s need for warm winter clothing rises in the winter, Goodwill’s® need for car donation rises as the community looks to them for more help during tough economic times.
