Technology offers many conveniences whether through computers, GPS systems, entertainment systems or digital cameras. Many of our convenient, time saving new gadgets use LCD screens. What many people don’t know is that many of these convenient gadgets use LCD screens that contain mercury lamps. In addition head lamps, entertainment systems, GPS systems and instrument panels in today’s cars feature LCD screens or backlighting that contain mercury lamps. Most people are aware of the dangers of mercury and even the simple mercury thermometers of years ago have been replaced by safer thermometers. So what happens to the mercury found in headlamps and other car systems in cars that are left to decompose (which they don’t) in our landfills?
