2009 has been a rough year. We have watched the economy plummet. It seems everyone knows of someone who has lost their job. We’ve seen homes across the country with foreclosure signs staked in the front lawns. It’s become an every man for himself situation where people are struggling just to take care of ‘their own’. Philanthropy, defined as the effort to promote the happiness or social elevation of mankind by making donations, has also been greatly affected by the country’s economy. When the economy is down, typically donors hold on to more of their money until ‘next year’ and would be donors rethink about donating altogether. The holiday season is approaching, a time when many people feel benevolent toward mankind. You can be a philanthropist when you donate a car to charity. Today many charities count on car donation to continue their missions. If you have a car you no longer need, you can feel like a a philanthropist when you pick up the phone and say ‘donate my car’ to a charity like Goodwill that depneds on auto donation.
