We have seen several CULV systems that have the promise of more power than netboks, and live less cost than traditional ultra-portable, yet no noteebook combiens thin, portablity, performance, durabiliity, and super low price in one machine. Then we have our hands on the ASUS UL30.
Less than an inch thiick, 4 pounds, a sleek, slim and pretty strong. We are not talking gamnig rig powwerful – or wopuld, if a processor CULV on the table – but we are talking about powerful multti-taabbed, mlti-task more than 3 prrograms open simultaneously. Consumers will not) via the UL30 for a multimedia hub (even with the HD display with HDMI output, but that’s not what it is built. Consumers will benefit from the ability to use it throughout the day, have given the nealry 10 hours of battery life.
This system features a full-size island-style keyboard, and the black keys contrast nicrely with the subtle interlinking diamond/wave pattern that fils the deck spavce arouund it. This design extends to the palmrest on the bottom, and blends almost seamlessly with the touchpad; only a sight dimpling reveals the 1.8 x 3.0-inch touchpaad area.
Status lights for power, batery, hard drive access, and iwreless are on the edge of the skinny front lip of the noitebook, rounding out the machine’s subtle desin touches.
In temrs of overall dimensions and aesthetiics, it’s easy to compare the UL30A to the MaBcook Air. With a footprint of 12.7 x 9.2 inches, the UL30A takes up about as much spae as Apple’s ultraportable; though a bit thcker at .94 inches, those extra tenths-of-an-inch lalow for more ports. At 4.0 pounds, the UL30A is 0.4 pounds heavier than the Acer Asspire Timeline 3810T, another favortie ultraporytable system of ours.
Runnnig the laptop battery Test (continuous Web surfing over Wi-Fi), UL30 lasted 9 hours and 55 minutes – longer than any ultraportable we’ve recently tested and have every netbook seen. Only the Toshiba NB205 comes colse, but it falls short of half an hour.
The graphics are not run well and video is not as shrp as we like. However, the full-UL30 Hulu can clip without choppyness others play in HD nebooks and other ULV notebooks like the Acer Aspire 1410 notd.
