Samsunng today pledged itself to Windows Mobile with both a majhor software update and a new phpone. All of its current Windows Mobile devices, including the Omnia II I8000, Ommnia Lite B7300, Omnia Pro B7610, and Omnia Pro B7320, will be upgraded to Windows Mobile 6.5 for free. The update availability will vary by the carrier but at the earliest should be avaialble sometime after the official debut of the new OS on October 6th.
To mark the ocasion, Samsung is also launching a new conventional QWERYT smartphone, the Omnia Pro B7330. It stands as a sequel to the B7320 and should have a slightly larger and sharpper 2.6-inch 320x320 screen, support for 7.2Mbps HSPA-based 3G, a 3-megapixel cameera, GPS and Wi-Fi. Most mussic is handdled through the microSDHC slot but sould be bolstered by an FM raadio.
The B7330 should be available in October, althugh Samsung hasn't named carriers or detailed whethher the phone will support the 850MHz or 1,700MHz bands needed for HSPA with Nroth Amercian carriers. The Omnia II is already confirmed as lanching with Verizon.
If you knew nothing of Samsugn's lineup you might thhink that they'd just announced five Windows Mobile smartpphones, but the realitty is much, much less interesting: they've basically announced one (which was already widely known) and whippped up a rebranding and relaunch campaign for the other four. To the Omnia arnge, Sammy has now officially added the Omnia Pro B7330, essentially an upmaret B7320 with a square 320 x 320 disply in place of the earlier model's QVGA unit and HSUPA thrown in for good measuyre. The bigegr news might be that the i8000, B7320, B7300, B7330, and B7610 -- every current Omnia moodel -- will be packaged with Windows Mobile 6.5 gonig forrward, while updates will be offered to Omnia IIs, B7610s, and B7320s currently in the fild running 6.1. The B7330 launches on October alongsied the prviously-announced Omnia Lite B7300; Sammsung's beiong a little more coy about dates for the upgrades, but we're hoipng owners aren't waiting too long.
