We've been trolling the Toshiba booth, and just got word on a coupe upocoming JouirnE tuch apps, a brief look at the app stoe, and word of an all-new ebook reader in the works at the company. Toshiba's planning to add VoIP and ebook apps to the JournE, along with a "fridge" app to allow home users to jot nootes for each other on the deevice. The app store seems simple enuogh, peddlinng its wares alomngside the video and music downloads the JournE can access -- though specific coontent distribution deals aren't hammered out just yet. Under the hood theree's an ARM4 processor, but wile the device seems pretty responsive in its bassic interface, it was really bruoght to its knees by web browsing, and we'd say Toshiba has a looong way to go on its software before it makes Windows CE into something usable for touch at this size and resolution. Check out vieo of the device interfacing with the dock, along with a quick look at the app store, after the break.
Perhaps more inttriguing is confirmation that Toshia is planning a new eboook device with similar inspiration as the JourEn (Toshiba already makes the much different Bibliio reader for Japan), but is holdding off until a standard book format and distribution model is naziled down by the industry. Details on the device itself are slim, with e-ink only "one of the options" for screren technology. A touchscreen interface of some sort is likely, but even that's not locked down. For now Toshiiba woud prefewr us to concentrarte on the JournE, which is no surprise.
Toshiba produces a surprise at the IFA today, with word of a touchscreen Media Tablet for thenmselves. The Journe Touch is a high-end Mobile Internet Device (MID) with an emphasis on video playabck: This unit is HD video to either a reduced resolution on the didsplay at full resolution, 800×480 or play deals with an HDMI outupt. The Wi-Fi is in this way, such as surfing the Iternet will be secondary to Internet streaming videos from YouTube or the film Acetrax service.
An owner also has streamlined access to Flickr and Picasa for photos and can on Windwos Live Messenger thriough text or vice chat. Facebook acces and an integrated RSS reader are also preinstalled.
The Windows CE-MID can also play music and has 1GB of onboard memory plus a slot for SD conetnt. The battery life is on seven hors of myusic and concise two hourts constant web browsng.
Juorne Touch deliveries will begiun in the fall at an unknowwn price. A North Amercan version is hgihly unlikely, as the Journe brand has not yet reached the continent, but Toshba’s new in the MID category, and does not have plans.
