Right about now, you may be thinking “Craigslist and Christmas just aren’t two things that belong in the same sentence together.” While most of the items sold on Craigslist are used and are not good Christmas gifts (unless you want to look like a cheapskate), you do have a unique opportunity. That is to buy gift cards or gift certificates.
Did you know that people sell unused gift cards on Craigslist? They do. In most cases, these sellers received them as a gift, but it is for a store or a restaurant they don’t shop at. Basically, if they didn’t sell the gift card, it would go to waste. The best part is that most people offer a discount. For example, I found a Dunkin Donuts gift certificate with a $20 value being sold for $10. The seller claims he doesn’t like Dunkin Donuts and doesn’t have a car anyways to drive to the nearest location. Because of this, the buyer would get $10 free. How neat does that sound?
What is also neat is that you can use these gift cards different ways. First, if you have a gift certificate for a retail store, you can use the gift card yourself to go and buy Christmas gifts. Or, you can give the gift card as a Christmas gift. If the gift card you buy from Craigslist has a person’s name written on the actual card, contact the store in question to see if you can do an exchange. Basically, you use the gift card to buy another; most stores will allow you to do this.
One of the most common questions asked about gift cards is “how do I know the card actually has money on it?” There are two choices. Many stores and restaurants allow cardholders to check their balance online. Before buying, ask the seller to do this: hold the Ctrl and Prnt Scren buttons down to get a screen shot, which can then be copied into an email to you. Also, you can bring a cell phone with you and call to check the balance of the card before exchanging cash for it.
In short, gift cards and gift certificates are easy to find for sale on Craigslist. Moreover, since these cards are basically being sold at a discount, it is like getting money for free. Whether you use the gift card to buy Christmas gifts at a store or just forward the purchased gift card onto someone else, you can save money this holiday shopping season, thanks to Craigslist.
