So you want to buy a sailboat? If so, there is a good chance you will find yourself at Craigslist.org. This online classified website and service is where many sailboat owners turn when they want to sell theirs. But wait! How can you find sailboats for sale and then how can you ensure you get a good deal?
Finding Sailboats for Sale on Craigslist
1 – You can visit Craigslist.org and select your location. This often involves choosing your state and then city. On the left-hand side of the page there will be a search box. Key in the phrase “sailboat” and you will get a list of sailboats for sale in the immediate area.
2 – You can download a Craigslist search program. These programs are desktop applications that allow you to search multiple locations at once. In fact, you can search Craigslist nationwide or statewide. This is ideal if you live along the coast. There can be lots of sailboats listed 2 hours away on another Craigslist location page, but they will not appear in your search. On Craigslist.org, you can only search one location page at a time.
Tips for Buying a Sailboat Listed on Craigslist
1 – Review your search results. Whether you search on Craigslist.org or use a search tool, you will get a list of results. These results appear as headlines. Many times, the headline contains the make, model, year, and selling price of the boat. Click on any headline that interests you.
2 – Read the listing carefully. After clicking on the headline or heading, you will be able to see the full listing inside. This should contain detailed information about the sailboat. If a seller does not provide detailed information, use the phone number or email address provided to ask questions.
3 – Pay close attention to those with pictures. Not all boat sellers on Craigslist think to upload pictures. If you get listings with pictures, closely look at those pictures. You can usually tell right away (just from a picture or two) if the boat is something you would like.
4 – Contact the seller to arrange a showing. If there are three or four sailboats on Craigslist you like, consider arranging a showing for all. Now, if your purchase is a joint purchase with you and your wife, bring her along too.
5 – Go for a test ride. If the weather allows for it, tell the seller you would like to see the sailboat on water. As long as the weather calls for it and the boat is already in a marina, he or she shouldn’t have a problem.
6 – Don’t feel pressured to make a purchase right away. A boat is a large purchase, so don’t rush to make a decision. If you arrange a showing and still aren’t sure, return home and think more. The seller should be okay with this, but do know that they may sell to another person who comes along before you make your decision.
