Sometimes it seems as if con artists have taken control of the internet. Regardless of where you turn, quality websites, like Craigslist.org, are stomping grounds for scammers. If you are trying to sell something on Craigslist, there is a good chance you will come into contact with a fraud. How do you know?
1 – They openly state they are from another country.
Always ask yourself this “why does a guy from Russia want my MP3 player; can’t he just buy his own?” Yes he can. See, the thing is that he really isn’t after your MP3 player or whatever you are selling. The first email may just express interest, but wait until the real scam starts.
2 – They must write you a $2,000 check for a $50 MP3 player.
This is the above mentioned scam part I was just talking about. All may be good at first (although some hints are usually dropped along the way) until, you get an email telling you that a check for $2,000 was mailed out even though the MP3 player you are selling is $50. Scammers will give lots of different reasons. It may be their last check and they made a mistake, they are including $50 extra for you to do them this one little favor, and so forth. Common sense will tell you it is a scam and it is. Your bank likely won’t tell you the check was a fake until the extra cash is on an airplane back to the scammer.
3 – They put cannot a sentence to get her. (yes, that was done on purpose)
Listen, not everyone has perfect English and that is okay. Some people didn’t pay attention in English class or just don’t care. The thing is that most people know how to write in a way that you can actually understand what they are saying. Craigslist.org is designed to connect local buyers and sellers. Most frauds on Craigslist are from another country and they cannot write or speak in English very well, no matter how hard they try. Use your best judgment as it is very easy to tell a lazy writer from a scam writer.
4 – They use “kind regards,” “warm greetings,” and so forth
When you open an email that says warm greetings or kind regards, your first thought may be to say “how cute!” There is a good chance you are dealing with someone from another country. Once again, there is nothing against foreigners, but you must always take into consideration that, when on Craigslist, they are usually frauds. Once again, think back to the MP3 player, can’t they just buy one locally? Someone who just moved to the United States from another country may still use the language, but they will be willing to meet you to pickup the purchase (not send you a check for $1,000 over and expect you to send the extra back).
5 – They Harass You
Avid Craigslist users know that you need to act fast. And, although disappointed when they miss a good deal, they don’t harass you to change your mind or start begging you to sell them another item (any item). This is because a scammer sees you as nothing more than dollar sign. They want to scam money from you and will try lots of times to do so. Con artists aren’t in the business just for the fun of it; they are in it to make money. Don’t expect them to be all “Okay, I am sorry you sold the MP3 player to someone else. Have a nice day.”
