Are you using Craigslist.org to find an office job? If so, you will likely create a resume to send off to jobs that catch your eye. If you haven’t updated your resume in a while or are creating a new one, there are some phrases you want to avoid. These phrases, which are outlined below, will make your resume appear more professional which should increases your chances of landing a job interview.
Avoid: I know how to use a computer.
We all know how to use a computer. In fact, you might be surprised how many five years olds can play computer games online. Knowing how to use a computer is a must for any office job advertised on Craigslist, but you must go into detail explaining your computer use. For example, you can list your experiences with Microsoft Office and so forth.
Avoid: I know how to use a telephone.
Once again, we all know how to use a telephone. The word you are missing is multi-line. If you want to work in an office environment, knowing how to use a multiple line phone is a must. It is great that you know how to answer a phone or dial one, but can you handle multiple customer calls without hanging up on paying clients?
Avoid: I like to type.
As you know, typing is an important part of working in an office environment, but it is not all. Plus, just because you like to type doesn’t mean you are a good at it. If you want to summarize your typing skills, make note of a class you took or highlight the words you can type a minute. Typing is a skill that is necessary for many of the office jobs listed on Craigslist, but the worst thing you can do is make it seem like nothing more than a hobby.
Avoid: I want to work in an office environment.
This phrase is most commonly used in the objective section of resumes. Guess what? You are applying for an office job, so you better want to work in an office environment. If you list an objective on your resume, be creative and specific to the job. For example: To obtain a steady job in a fast-paced medical office.
Avoid: I am a team player or I am a leader.
At one point, saying you were either a team player or a leader was good to mention on a resume. Now, it raises some doubts. If you are a leader, will you be able to work as a team with co-workers? If you are a team player, will you be able to take charge when needed? It may be best to just leave these phrases off your resume. You can, however, use them when asked about your strengths in a job interview. List them both.
