Etiquette and Craigslist are two words you might not put in the same sentence together, but you should. Many buyers and sellers on Craigslist meet each other once and never cross paths again. But you never know. Whether you run into that person who you bought the mattress from at the grocery store or if you end up buying another item they list on Craigslist, you want that individual to have semi-decent memories of you. For that reason, it is a good idea to practice good etiquette on Craigslist. What should or shouldn’t you do?
Be polite when calling or emailing a seller for more information. It seems as if many of us have forgotten how to be polite. This is very important with email, because a seller likely has at least two interested buyers. They are going to read all their emails before sending off an it’s yours email. Put yourself in their shoes. Would you rather sell to a person who says “I could buy this mattress new for $20 more, but I guess I will take it” or “Hi. I am interested in your mattress. Please respond back if it is still available.”
Don’t bother wasting your time emailing a seller to tell them their price is too high. Many mistakenly believe this will help them get a better deal. If you want to haggle for a better price, go ahead and try, but don’t use bad judgment. If a seller is living in lala land by asking $100 too much for a used mattress, let them figure it out on their own. Just look elsewhere because there are plenty of used mattresses on Craigslist listed at realistic prices.
Don’t harass Craigslist sellers who may not respond to you. Yes, it would be nice if a seller responds to your email or phone call to let you know someone else got the mattress, but this doesn’t always happen. All you need to do is call or email a seller once; let them know you are interested. If the item is yours, they will either call or email you back. If you don’t hear anything after a week, get the point. Don’t keep on calling or emailing with stalkerish “why are you ignoring me” messages
Do come prepared to buy. Craigslist sellers don’t want to waste time. They want their item sold, want the money in their hands, and for you to be on your way. If you are only going to look at a mattress, don’t feel pressured to buy, but be ready if you like what you see. This may involve driving a truck to bring the mattress home or straps to tie it to your car. With this approach, you save both you and the seller time because you don’t have to arrange another meeting the following day.
Finally, close out the exchange of cash for mattress (or whatever else you are buying) with a thank you. Remember, you never know when you will cross paths with the Craigslist seller again so make sure you made a decent impression.
