When given the chance to live off-site, many college students would jump at the opportunity. Unfortunately, most cannot afford to rent an apartment by themselves. If you are a college student who wants to rent an apartment off campus and if you need a roommate to help you spilt the costs, you can visit Craigslist.org. This online classified website and service has a housing section. There, you can find apartments for rent, search roommate wanted ads, or create your own.

Find a Roommate on Craigslist – Tip #1

Opt for another college student. There are all different types of people looking for a roommate on Craigslist. You may feel more comfortable sharing an apartment with an adult who has a steady job, but what if that adult is a single parent? Will you be able to study with a kid screaming in the background? In most cases, it is best for college students to room with other college students, as they tend to have similar habits and schedules.

Find a Roommate on Craigslist – Tip #2

Be realistic. Whether you have scored an apartment and are just looking for a roommate to share that apartment with or if you are responding to a roommate wanted ad you found on Craigslist, be realistic. This means you should intend to spilt the costs evenly with your roommate. It is easy to be a little bit greedy when you are already the apartment renter or when the lease is in your name. Say, you pay $1,000 a month for rent and charge your roommate $650 a month. If he or she were to ever find out that they pay more than half the rent, a dispute is likely to arise and then you may be left high and dry.

Find a Roommate on Craigslist – Tip #3

Get both of your names listed on the lease. A lease is a legally binding agreement. In the event the apartment is trashed and the landlord refuses to give back your security deposit or goes to extremes and charges you additional damage fees, don’t be left responsible for someone else’s mistakes. When your roommate’s name is listed on the lease too, you both share equal responsibility. In all honesty, most college roommates share apartments and have no problems, but are you really willing to take the financial risk?
