Craigslist.org has skyrocketed in popularity over the past few years. Whatever you need to do, whether it be make extra money, buy a new home, rent a new apartment, find a job, find a good deal, or even find a girlfriend, you can do it on Craigslist. Regardless of your reason for using Craigslist, you are likely to either create a posting to appear on the website or send an email to someone as a response. When doing so, what are some of the most common phrases you should avoid?

Phrase: I will touch base with you later.
Why to avoid it: Are you playing a game of baseball? No. Are you trying to sound cool? It just isn’t working. You are a normal person, so speak normal. Instead of using this stupid phrase that is way overused, how about you try “I need a few days to think about it; I will call you then.” If you are applying for or inquiring about a job, this is a must as you sound professional. Sounding cool is for a night at the bar trying to pickup dates, but even then this phrase isn’t likely to produce good results.

Phrase: At the end of the day…
Why to avoid it: When using in conjunction with Craigslist, it is common for a seller to not accept your request for a discount because “at the end of the day, they have a family to feed.” The same can be said for buyers who need a discount “at the end of the day, I still only have $100 to spend because I too have a family.” Who gives a crap? Don’t waste your time spouting out an extra sentence; just say no. That is it; no, nothing more. Trust me, they will get the point.

Phrase: Are we on the same page?
Why to avoid it: What are you sitting around reading a book or have you regressed back to your 10th grade English class? No? Then don’t use this phrase. Whether you are using Craigslist to make extra money through gigs, find a job, get a good deal, or find a date, don’t say “are we on the same page?” It is plain dumb and for no reason other that it was used way too much back in the day. Speaking of which…

Phrase: Back in the day
Why to avoid it: Just because! Seriously, when most people hear this phrase they automatically think “here comes the life story.” Buyers and sellers on Craigslist are likely to see this phrase the most (back in the day this use to cost X amount of dollars). If you use this phrase to begin a life story, do yourself and everyone else a favor and just stop.

Phrase: On the fence
Why to avoid it: Unless you are straddling a fence or looking to buy one on Craigslist, keep the fences out of it. Regardless of the situation at hand, don’t sound stupid. Better yet, don’t try to sound cool because you will likely find yourself falling off that fence.

These phrases are just a few of the many that you should avoid using on Craigslist. Others include no question about it, now or never, I have a lot on my plate right now, or I will drop you a line. Why? Do you even have to ask?
