Are you looking to buy a new home? Most homebuyers in your shoes look at real estate flyers or in the classified section of their local newspapers. These are good ways to find homes for sale, but so is Craigslist.org. This popular classified website has many homes listed for sale, from all across the country. What are the pros and cons of using the website to buy a home?

The Pros of Using Craigslist

You can find a large selection of homes listed on the website. There are homes that are listed for sale by the current owners, as well as professional realtors. Whether you are looking for a one, two, three, or four bedroom home, you can find it on Craigslist.

It is free to search Craigslist for homes. You don’t have to purchase a newspaper to review the real estate listings and you don’t have to join a membership website to get full details about the homes for sale. It is 100% free to use. Not only is it free to search, but it is free to contact home sellers and realtors.

It is easy to use Craigslist.org. If you want to look for a home in your current community, visit the Craigslist home page and then select your location. You can then use the search box on the left-hand side of the page. Change the default search settings to housing first. You will then see a list of all for sale homes in the surrounding area that met your search criteria. You can click on each headline for the full listing.

The Cons

Not all Craigslist home sellers post a lot of information. Luckily, you will get that information later on. You would never buy a home without first seeing it, so this initial lack of information is okay. If you want to save your time though, ask the seller or realtor to email you additional pictures or more information. Before you make the trip to see the house, ensure it is really worth the time and travel.

There are some Craigslist search limitations. As mentioned above, you search the location you selected from the home page. You do this area and this area alone. If you have a range of two or three hours in which you are looking to move to, you may have multiple city pages to search. Unless you download and use a Craigslist search tool, you would need to perform separate housing searches on each page.
