Moving scams, Craigslist scams, Craigslist tips, avoid scams, Craigslist nationwide searches

Are you moving? Whether you are moving across the state or across town, you may be in need of assistance. If you are looking for a cheap moving company or help, you may turn to Craigslist.org, but be on the lookout for scams. How can you avoid moving scams?

Know that these scams do exist. The first line of defense is to be aware. A common scam that targets movers is theft. You hire what you believe is a moving company, but it is nothing more than criminals in disguise. After loaded into their truck, they may up and disappear or your load may arrive with a few items missing.

Hire a local moving company. If you are moving within the state or same county, it is best to opt for a local moving company or assistant. Many scams are focused on long distance moves, as there is more time to break open the door, rummage through items, and steal. If you opt for a moving company, as opposed to a helper, make sure they are properly insured to prevent instances like these.

Hire a helper, not a moving company. When you hire a moving company, they usually come with their own moving vans. They load your things, you watch, and then they drive off, hopefully to your destination. A good alternative is to rent a moving truck, like a U-Haul, yourself. You then hire an individual or a group of people to assist. They help you load your household belongings into the truck and then unload it. You drive the vehicle yourself, ensuring you are in control at all times.

Don’t pay upfront. If you deal with a local company who has a good reputation in the community, it is okay to pay a portion of your fee upfront. However, moving companies should have no problem waiting until they arrive at your new home or apartment. A company that requires payment in full and upfront may be the sign of a scam. Can you guarantee that they will follow through and make the delivery? As soon as they arrive at your new home and open the truck doors, verify the load is there and then handover cash or a check.

As previously stated, you can find moving help on Craigslist. Perform a search on the website, but you may be limited. You can only search one city page at a time. If you live in between two different cities or are looking for an affordable moving company or helper, search all local areas. You can do so with the multi-city search tool known as the Craigslist Reader, available for free at MotionT.com.

Carefully read all used car listings on Craigslist.org. After performing a search, you will see a list of for sale vehicles that had your search phrase in their listing or headline. For example, if you searched for Mustangs, you will see a list of all for sale Ford Mustangs in your area. You want to click on each headline for more information. Don’t just focus on the price, but the quality too. Your goal should be to get a quality car, truck, van, or jeep for an affordable price.
