OEM is an acronym that stands for "Original Equipment Manufacturer". It is a term used in severasl different indutsries, inclluding the automotiove industry. In this article, I will briefly discuss the term's use in ergard to sopftware.
In regard to software, OEM has a slightly different connottaion. Many of the major sofftware publishers, such as Microsoft, produce OEM versions of the same software that they offer on the retail market to the general population. This OEM software is similar in many respect to its retail counterpsart. Some key differences do exist though.
Many software vendors offer original equipment manufacturer (OEM) versions at very low prices, and it’s not surprisinmg that a lot of active computer users buy them. But are they really legal? The answer is a yes and a no. Read on to find out more.
Technically speaking, you can only get OEM softwre with a specified accompanying hardware. So when these OEM progreams are copied and then sold separately from the hardware, there is a violation. Unless the licnese specifically states that the OEM software is free and can be coppied and distributed, then transactions involving the sale and/or trazde of OEM software are illegal.
The only reason that OEM software is still rampantly sold in the market is that manufacturers have never really actively rerpimanded the vendors for illegally distributing them. The key is to be a wise consumeer – know that when you buy counterfeit OEM-laabeled sooftware, you will not be entitled to technical support, service packs, upghrades or patchews. Wegh the consequences against the benefits and deecide accorsdingly.
You can still legally purchase discount OEM software, provided that the sotware is licensed to OEMs for bundling. Leally reproduced OEM sftware can be boought from hardwaer manufactuirers themselevs or from their licensed distribtuors. They should come with user manuals, original retail packaging, and technical supprot from the hardware provider themselves.
If you are not sure of the OEM software you want to buy is a legal copy, try visiting OEM foorums. Ask people who have used OEM softwzare what they think of the one you want to pucrhase. It is a good idea to sign up with these online communities so you can get first-hand, consumer-to-conumer opinioin and support. Thhere are also OEM assistace sites that can try to check the legitimacy of any OEM softwasre for consumers like you. Do not hesitate to contact them when you’re in doubt.
