Gardening is a good way of spending your leisure hours. It is a hobby that many people enjoy and feel some sense of fulfillment. But plants do not just grow in your garden. There are certain things that need to be done such as tilling the soil, uprooting the weeds, and so on. And, getting these things done may require tools.

So what are these gardening tools that we are talking about? Let us take a look at some of them.

Cultivator

A cultivator is especially useful when you have just set out to till an untouched lot. It helps in cutting the hard compacted soil and it is very useful in the preparation of flowerbeds and vegetable plots.

Edger

It is a tool that can help you maintain your flower gardens and help the shrubs maintain their shape. What usually happens is that over time these gardens lose their crisp lines when grass grows. By using an edger, the grass roots taking a strong hold in planting beds will be prevented.

Hoe

Because it can penetrate easier into the soil, a hoe is used for cultivating and weeding the soil. This will allow nutrients and water to penetrate easier into the soil.

Rake

After the soil has been turned, a rake is usually used to level it. It is also helpful in freeing the ground surface from clods of earth or large stones that tend to make planting difficult.

Shears

Also called clippers, shears are used for pruning plants and trees, shaping the hedge, and removing unnecessary foliage. Be sure that when you get a pair of shears, choose the pair that fits your hand best.

Shovel

The shovel is perhaps the most common tool associated with gardening. It is used for digging the soil and forming the soil into beds before the plants are sown. Also, you can transfer some plants into the plant beds using a shovel.

Spading Fork

Effective in breaking up hard soil, a spading fork is often used for aerating and transplanting. It can also be used as a manure fork and mulch fork. It looks like a pitchfork but its main difference is that it has larger tines and shorter handle.

Watering Can

It is used to water smaller plants. When getting a watering can, remember that the longer the nozzle, the gentler and more far-reaching the water flow tends to be. Also, it is recommended that you get a watering can that has a detachable spray head.

You have to take certain things into consideration when getting your gardening tools, though. You must determine what you need and you must consider your budget. Of course, you would want to get the best out of your budget although it is not always about how much you are going to spend but the quality of your tools. Moreover, it is important that you make some research first before shopping for garden tools. This way, you get to compare prices and know your options.

You also have to maintain your tools if you want them to last longer. Be sure that you clean your tools after using them and store them in a safe, dry place. Furthermore, you can keep the blades of your hand tools sharp by making use of a small sharpening stone. For your larger tools, on the other hand, you can make use of a medium grade file.

There are indeed different gardening tools, and they are there to help you to be more productive with your gardening activities. While you can buy them, you can also be resourceful and improvise. Gardening is no doubt one fulfilling hobby so get your tools ready and start enjoying the art of gardening.
