Baby showers are about celebrating a new life coming into the world. And what better way to celebrate than to throw a party? What is a party without food? A great baby shower requires a great baby shower menu. Granted, this might not be the main reason for attending a baby shower, but it’s always a great incentive!

A baby shower menu can consist of simple snacks or a full sit-down meal. Most baby shower menus, though, fall somewhere in between. The first step in compiling your baby shower menu is to decide if you are going to be serving brunch, appetizers or dessert.

A typical baby shower menu will contain finger sandwiches, a vegetable and/or fruit tray with dips, chips with dips, and the baby shower cake. These are all served buffet style.

A sit-down brunch or tea party can be a great option, as well as an afternoon barbeque. The baby shower menu will be determined by what type of party you intend to throw. If you decide not to have a sit down meal, you should remember to serve foods that do not require the use of a knife.

Beverages on your baby shower menu should include a punch bowl, which is always a beautiful attraction. Also, for a refreshing, summer affair, iced tea or sparkling water. Coffee and tea are always welcome additions. Remember, though, to never serve a beverage that the guest of honor is unable to enjoy.

Alcohol has no place on a baby shower menu. There are a few things to keep in mind when planning a baby shower menu. The guest of honor probably has some dietary restrictions during her pregnancy. For example, the mommy-to-be can’t eat raw fish, as can be dangerous for her baby. High levels of mercury in some fish can also be a danger, so steer clear of shark, mackerel, swordfish and tuna.

Your baby shower menu should not have any uncooked meats or eggs. It sounds simple enough, but we tend to forget things that like eggnog and Hollandaise sauce have raw eggs in them.

Also, remember to check with the mommy-to-be to see if there are any food allergies that she may have. Some pregnant women have severe food aversion. It is easy enough to ask if there are any foods that she would rather not have included in the baby shower menu.
