Baby shower etiquette is changing and rules are being bent, but there are some rules that should still followed. Some of the basic rules of baby shower etiquette are these:

Friends or co-workers have traditionally thrown baby showers, but, more and more; it is becoming common for close family members to throw baby showers, as well. The new rule of baby shower etiquette is; throw a shower if you want to throw a shower. Only the parents to be should not host their own baby shower.

Baby showers usually only include women, but there is no baby shower etiquette rule that says that men cannot attend. New dads enjoy opening presents, too! Of course, if you do decide to invite the guys, try to stay away from games that are too cutesy or that might embarrass them. Try to keep both men and women in mind when organizing activities and foods for the shower.

While it is becoming more acceptable to invite guest by telephone or e-mail, good baby shower etiquette requires sending a mailed invitation. Many people will appreciate this method, and your invitation will serve as a reminder of your special day.

Baby shower etiquette suggests that a shower should be held 1-2 months before the baby is due. This is a good time frame for the parents and gives them enough time to shop for important items that were not received at the shower. A shower held too close to the due date might be missing one vital attendee, the new mommy, if the baby comes early.

Old rules of baby shower etiquette would say that, besides assigning a particular theme, it is definitely a no-no to tell your invitees what to bring.

As baby gift registries are becoming more commonplace, and more popular, it’s not against the rules of baby shower etiquette to include a note in the invitation that says where the new mommy is registered. It is better, though, to use word of mouth to get the word around. Make sure to include items from a wide range of prices. Be sure that the cost of items covers a wide range. You might also suggest that guests chip in for one, larger item.

Baby shower etiquette requires you to send out thank-you notes for your gifts. As you open them at your party, ask someone to write down all of the gifts as well as whom the gift is from. A benefit to getting your thank-you notes out early is that the new mother will be far too busy with her new little one after the baby is born. A most important rule of baby shower etiquette is to remember to thank the host of your baby shower.
