There are plenty of people who are affected by the problem of snoring. This problem can be dealt with by using one of the many options available. Making use of home remedies is one such approach. One can also use the various available stop snoring devices. Remedies like these are however of no help in cases when the condition is critical. This is when a surgery to stop snoring is often looked upon at.

One should always take into consideration the opinion of a good doctor before actually opting for the surgery. The doctor would analyze your condition and would thus make a decision. The doctor might subject you to a sleep test. In such a test you would be given sedatives to make you fall asleep. The doctor would thus be able to diagnose the actual reason that is making you snore.

The surgical procedure that would be preferred would depend on the cause that is leading to snoring. Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty is considered to be one of the most frequently carried out surgical procedures. UPPP is what this procedure is commonly referred to as. This procedure actually involves removing the blockage of the throat by the removal of the tissues. This blockage is often the actual cause of snoring. The parts of the soft palate and the uvula are basically removed. Removal of the tonsils is also a common thing done.

One of the other types of surgical technique is uvulopalatoplasty. It is also referred as LAUP. This basically involves the use of laser. This technique is used to rectify the problem of snoring when it is caused due to the blockage of the air passage by the uvula. In order to rectify the problem of snoring, the uvula is cut in this technique so that its contact with the throat is avoided.

The problem of snoring can also be rectified with the help of Genioglossus and hyoid advancement. This is generally known as tongue suspension surgery. This surgery is basically performed so that the tongue does not roll back to the throat, when one is asleep. This is because one of the major causes of snoring is the tongue rolling back towards the throat thus blocking the air passage. Your problem can thus be easily overcome by this surgery if it is caused due to this reason. A screw is actually installed in the mandible in this kind of surgery. After this is done, stitches are applied to the area below the tongue. This procedure is a reversible one.

It is always very good to know that the problem of snoring is permanently cured by the surgical procedures. In the event of the success of the surgery, a person will no longer have to use the various stop snoring devices which were used before. However as with the other procedures, there are certain disadvantages associated with the surgical procedures as well. The major drawback is the cost. The risks associated with surgeries are one of the other drawbacks. There is also a high possibility of the surgery not being successful or other complications arising from it.
