Business today is faster, more competitive and change focused than even ten years ago. Some retail channels are hardly recognizable today because of the changes which have been wrought in recent years.
Some traditional business processes have also changed dramatically. Take advertising. It used to be that newspaper, TV, radio and leaflet distribution were the hallmarks of just about any retail campaign. Today, social media is the new way to reach out to customers. Whereas in the past retailers could go to a media outlet or an ad agency and they would do the work, today you have to create the social media campaign yourself.
Many retail businesses facing change, either structural change in their area of specialization or in an aspect of how they go about business, give up thinking that change is too hard for them.
You only have to look around some shopping malls to see retail businesses that the times have passed by.
For a retail, business to have a future you cannot ignore change. The best way to deal with change is to force it upon yourself, pursue it like a goal.
By pursuing change you set the timing and agenda for your business. You will find yourself taking more risks, experimenting with new products and processes. It is better to do this and fail than to wait to follow someone else. But how do you do it if you're not used to driving change. Here are some simple steps
Take small steps. Commit to a change timetable of small daily steps. If that is too much, take weekly steps. Small steps changes may be as simple as a change in a process at the counter, introducing a new product line or trying a new approach to marketing.
Engage your team. Get everyone from the frontline back to suggest changes to the business. Be prepared for a broad range of ideas. Implement the best.
Look at your business. Step outside and objectively assess when your business is at compared to others in your field. Research trends in other countries. Look for far off ideas which may apply to your area. Consider being an early-adopter.
Brainstorm. Some of the best ideas for bringing change to a business are the craziest. Take some team members out for a relaxed dinner and pose the challenge to them. Give participants free rein on recasting the business and see how far they can take you into a brighter future.
By chasing change you have more control over your business agenda than if you wait for change to force itself upon you. Being in charge is what retail business owners want so embracing change should be welcome and easy. Sadly, for too many it is not. They discover the need to change too late.
If your business is successful and you do not feel a need for change, at least allow you and your team to explore what might be. Such a conversation may provide several small steps which when tried open you to the opportunities of bigger change.
Change is inevitable. Embrace it. Make the opportunity yours, on your terms.
