Should you be using wholesalers rather than retail?

Many business people dont realise that they too can benefit from purchasing from a wholesale supplier. This is not something that is only open to the big boys, in fact very few wholesalers will only trade with large retailers. Sole traders are also able to take advantage of wholesale discounts.
Dont assume that it is a problem if a wholesaler asks you for proof that you are trade. Many will be happy with just a business card or some letter headed paper.
Most wholesalers define themselves as trade only for the discounts from manufacturers and for tax benefits. You dont need to have a limited company to be eligible. The few wholesalers that want to restrict themselves to large firms tend to have sizable minimum orders. This is not that common though, so you will easily find another wholesaler with a much smaller minimum order.
There are less differences than you probably think between wholesalers and retailers. They both want to sell to you, so you would hardly expect the wholesalers to make themselves much more difficult to deal with. The biggest difference is that a wholesaler can save you a lot of money on your purchasing.
Why is wholesale cheaper then? Well the simple answer is because of economies of scale. You would also typically buy in more volume from a wholesaler. This model is in some ways fairly similar to working with industry buying groups, another option that most business owners would be well advised to explore robustly.
What sort of things can get you off to a bad start dealing with wholesalers? What if the proof of trade status you are able to provide isnt acceptable to them? You have probably stumbled across one of the minority of wholesalers that dont want to trade with small businesses.Talk to other wholesalers and you wont find it difficult to find one who does want to trade with you.
Getting a trade card will also make it easier to deal with more wholesalers. Many wholesalers operate their own trade card scheme and you are unlikely to be able to deal with those suppliers without being a member. Its unlikely to cost you anything and you will really only need to provide minimal information or proof of status. This card can make it easier to deal with more wholesalers though. This proves to them that one of their competitors has already vetted you and accepted you as a customer. Dont be put off from applying from these cards as they are definitely worth having.
