It is true, decorative Corbels and Ceiling Medallions enhance the aesthetics of homes. Unfortunately though, people have misconceptions. Instead of capitalizing on the benefits of crown moldings, homeowners choose cheaper options and then lose out not only on décor but also on an opportunity to add value to their homes.

Let us analyze each of these misconceptions one by one.

Low ceilings

Low ceilings will make my room look even lower. This is what many people think. Unfortunately this is not true. In fact, decorative molding can make your room look larger albeit with some well thought designs. What you need to know is that when moldings project further than the wall, you get an optical delusion that makes ceilings look higher than what they actually are.

There is no need for quality

Why spend money when even insubstantial crown molding will add value to my home.

Nothing is farther from the truth. Inexpensive and badly crafted crown moldings do anything but add splendor to your home. There is no point in undermining the potential value of interior décor. If you install flimsy molding and hope for a buyer to be hoodwinked, you are sadly mistaken. More often than not, buyers have keen eyes. Not only can they perceive aesthetics well-enough, they will also sense the difference in terms of material used and the costs involved. The looks, performance and useful life of crown molding can be compromised by shoddy quality and poor workmanship. Remember, at the end of the day, you will get what you pay for.

You have no option but to use wood

This concept is a myth. Besides, ceiling medallions made of wood will cost a fortune. Polyurethane has now replaced wood as the preferred material for crown molding. Poly is wonderful for curvy walls. Moreover, the material is durable and can withstand the elements. Which is unlike wood that will crack and warp with temperature and humidity changes. More importantly polyurethane is cost effective and saves time. Wood needs time consuming layering and manual joining of numerous pieces. In contrast, polyurethane come in prefabricated sections enabling the assembly to be made to just the right size. This saves time and money.

Crown molding do not suit children's rooms

This is not true. High density polyurethane is tough and durable and can withstand any amount of rough use.

Crown molding needs uniformity in design for all rooms

Not necessarily, even though consistent dimensions does have certain advantages. You can choose different styles for different rooms from a wide assortment of forms.

If you are finally deciding on crown molding installation work, you will need to understand all the options and know answers to some important questions. For example, can you do the installation yourself or must you hire a professional? Do you need a permit and design approval from the local authorities?

The answer to the first question is, hiring a professional will ensure quality work. You will, however, need to take care to choose the contractor carefully and link payment to milestones after appropriate checks.

Permission and approvals are usually not required for crown molding work. You must, nevertheless, verify that the work complies with standard guidelines.

You will not regret having transformed your home. Decorative molding is a marvelous option to convert plain looking rooms to refine and elegant looking spaces.
