Wholesaling is a growing business trend in today's market. This is due in part to the fact that new clothing is always in demand. Wholesaling is fantastic because the customers you will mainly be dealing with are the retail establishments that order directly from you and not the individual customers. If you want to start wholesale clothing business for yourself there are some things you should be aware of first.

The Role of the Wholesaler

The wholesaler is tasked with being a middleman of sorts that will oversee the distribution of the goods to the retail establishments. A new batch of clothing ay come in from the manufacturer, and this is typically a huge bulk order that couldn't possibly be shipped directly to just a single retailer. A wholesaler will take the clothing from the manufacturer and divvy up the clothing into smaller batches for the specific retailers who order it. This is a very necessary step. Most retailers are quite small as compared to the huge manufacturing companies and the manufacturers cannot afford to ship things in small batches. The middleman is very necessary in this regard.

Much like the retailers, the wholesaler buys from the manufacturer and sells the items at a profit markup. The retailers are still getting the goods at a very reasonable price and they mark up the items further to sell them to the public on an individual basis.

Wholesaling can work two ways; there is the business to business way where the wholesale distributor will purchase goods from the manufacturer and sell them at a profit to the retailers and then there's the wholesalers selling to other wholesalers.

Before You Begin

Just as any other wholesale business takes careful planning, handling and maintenance, so does the wholesale clothing business. You will require great negotiating skills, a good nose to sniff out the next item that will be the top seller and superb salesmanship. What you want to do is buy the items for the lowest price possible and then make your profit by tacking on the dollar amount that will make the deal attractive to your customers. This is a very delicate balancing act.

One of the keys to the success of your wholesale clothing business is the experience you have. The right person to start up a wholesale clothing business should have a background filled with various skills and jobs that pertain to the industry and running a business. Sales and cold-calling skills are necessary as well as finance, experience and business management skills which will equip you to handle the business back-end.

Setting up Shop

When you finally do get around to the setting up, there are still some things to think about. In the various industries that a wholesale business can be established in there are certain requirements for storage such as a food wholesaler's need for refrigeration and cold storage. When you start up your wholesale clothing business you won't need to worry about finding any kind of sophisticated storage facilities, you can simply rent a typical storage space or even run it out of a basement to cut the startup costs. The clothes basically need to be kept safe from the elements and theft.
