Undoubtedly, all living beings having eyes may have problems with their eyes. Speaking about cat's eyes it’s necessary to mention that they’re rather unique in comparison with other animals' eyes. Besides, cats use their eyesight more deeply than some other pets, due to this reason it’s extremely important to notice in time if a cat has any problems with its eyes. The problems with cat’s eyes are rather easy to define. That matter is that every cat has an additional eyelid in each eye. This eyelid plays an extremely important role for the health of cat’s eyes. Usually, those extra eyelids aren’t visible, so if you can see this second eyelid unfortunately, your pet may have problems with its eyes. The other symptoms of illness of cat’s eyes include frequent blinking, squinting, or cat’s attempts to scratch at its eyes too often.
It’s rather easy to examine your cat's eye yourself. First of all, keep your cat calm and take a bright light in order to see cat’s eyes properly. Then try to compare the problematic eye to the other eye and check whether there’re any differences in color or size. A good rather easy vision test consists in covering one eye and moving your finger towards the other eye for a few times. Such movements should result in a blink if the eye is healthy. Cloudy or hazy eyes aren’t healthy. If it’s too difficult to hold your cat or if it’s frightened try to wrap a small blanket firmly around your cat and pin it around its neck. Never squeeze your cat too hard if it’s willing to get out as this could cause greater problems to you.
If you understand that the cat’s eye is painful to the touch or extremely sensitive to light don’t hesitate to take your pet to a veterinarian. You may also get your veterinarian advice via the telephone call and continue your examination. However, you can get answers to your questions only if your veterinarian isn’t against telephone calls. Take note of any changes about the cat’s eyes like the texture and color. If the eye is cloudy it can mean some inner eye problem. Pink eye usually has redness in the eye and a sticky discharge of mucus.
If your cat has any of the upper mentioned symptoms check up whether it has anything in its eye. If it really has some object in its eye you may remove it yourself but be extremely careful while doing it. In case if there’s something that has damaged the eye or eyelid or resulted in agitation around the eye it’s better to visit your veterinarian. Never risk your cat’s health by trying to fix the problem yourself, otherwise you can make an injury even worse.
Finally, remember that cats can have eye problems just like people can. So, examine your cat and check up whether you can define the problem. It’s always better to contact your veterinarian.
