Wedding celebrations are joyous all over the world with Puerto Rico being no exception. There are a number of traditions that form the backbone of your conventional Puerto Rican wedding. One of such traditions is the offering to the groom and bride a beverage that is called café con leche, which is severed in a coconut converted into a cup.
The Bouquet of the Bride
The bridal bouquets that you get in Puerto Rico are made up of many amapola, which is a flower traditional to weddings in Puerto Rico. The bouquet may also include a fan which is another tradition associated with the Puerto Rican wedding. The maids of honour at the wedding also carry the same bouquets, which could be silk or real, along with the fans as they are said to signify good luck for the newlywed.
Traditional Wedding Favours
The capias is a topical wedding favour which is presented to the guests at a traditional Puerto Rican wedding. They are ribbons, narrow in shape that have the names of both the bride and groom imprinted on them, on one side and the marriage date on the other. These capiases are snipped off the bouquet before they are given out to the guests by the new couple.
The Wedding Ceremony
The wedding ceremony in Puerto Rico isn’t much different from any wedding ceremony that you’ve been to. During the ceremony of the wedding, a plate of coins will be blessed by a priest and then given to the groom. Once the exchange of wedding vows has been completed, the groom then proceeds to give the plate of coins to his new partner as a wedding gift. These coins represent good luck and prosperity for the newlywed couple. During the wedding ceremony, you can usually hear the strains of the sounds of conqui, creating a romantic atmosphere for the wedding.
The Wedding Reception
The customs of Puerto Ricans determines that at the main tables head, a doll that is dressed very similarly to the bride is placed. The doll is then decked with charms which are passed out to the guests of the wedding. Your typical Puerto Rican wedding cake is decked with seashells and is usually coconut, rum or pineapple flavoured.
Weddings in Puerto Rico are events filled with delicious foods and romantic music. A traditional waltz called “danza criolla” is usually chosen for the first dance between the bride and groom.
