Using symbols from Irish weddings on that special day of yours is a way to symbolise the love that you have for one another through Irish culture. The use of symbols in Irish weddings is a tradition that goes back hundreds of years.

Many of these symbols are thought to keep bad spirits away while others are thought to bring you good luck. It’s no surprise that you’ll see many Celtic symbols fashioned at Irish weddings.

Below are a few examples of the use of Irish wedding symbols, and ideas that you can use in your wedding.

Examples of these wedding symbols

The horseshoe symbols is said to bring good luck, and is very popularly used in Irish weddings. While carrying around a horseshoe on your wedding night may not be the most practical or attractive thing, there are many methods that you can use to blend it in with the theme of your wedding.

Claddagh Rings symbolise marriage and love and are popularly used for wedding decorations and wedding rings. This design is made up of two hands holding a heart with a crown.

Shamrocks are likely the most common Irish symbol, primarily because of how rare they are in nature. If you are lucky enough to find one, I suggest you don’t let it go.

Trinity Knots offer a unique and beautiful design for many Irish weddings. There are numerous designs and styles you can find them in.

Bells are typically given and received as gifts which are supposed to symbolise ones marriage. It’s said that they are able to keep bad spirits away.

Using Symbols for your Special Day

The symbols you use can form the basis of your wedding theme, or you can use the symbols as part of the overall theme of your wedding. For a Celtic theme, often no more than two symbols are chosen for it.

For all the materials that are printed in your wedding, you can use a symbol for. This includes your wedding programs, save the dates and invitations.

Trinity knots are unique in that they offer an original touch to printed material. Search around to find a design that suits your fancy, and ensure that all of your printed materials are using the design that you’ve chosen.

While carrying around some symbols, such as the horseshoe, may not be practical it’s still possible for you to make them a part of your wedding. You could have a small shamrock or horseshoe sewn into your bridal wedding dress.
