Would You Risk Your Online Retail Business on Salehoo's Dropship Wholesalers

Simply put, I buy and sell items through online auction sites. Operating from a fairly obscure area with postal services that travel slower than a snail, the only way I can get items to buyers in a reasonable amount of time is through wholesale companies that agree to drop-ship.

As I was not fully immersed in the manufacturing business, I also had no knowledge of distributors in my locality, let alone halfway around the world. As such, the first challenge I had to hurdle was finding a reliable wholesale company who would agree to drop-ship my orders. It is not an easy decision to make, especially since the business relied on repeat orders; I could certainly not afford to test a whole lot of companies. This article shares what I have learned through the experience.

As every businessman knows, information is critical. Extensive research should be the first step towards making a crucial management decision. Scanning various fora on business outsourcing and drop-shipping as well as a search on Google surfaced Salehoo as the single most controversial company offering a directory of drop-ship wholesalers. Opinions expressed weighed heavily on both ends of the spectrum. Whereas some reviews labeled it as a scam, much more reviews, however, noted its benefits and authenticity. For a nominal fee invested in a six-month membership, it was easy to verify the reviews.

First and foremost, all reviews naming Salehoo as a wholesaler were shot to pieces. None of the products are actually sold on the site but listed suppliers' products are categorized to facilitate easier searches of the directory. Membership provides access to a fairly wide variety of suppliers, numbering over 8,000. The fact that new suppliers' products undergo testing is a bonus for its clients and helps reduce the risk factor, particularly when hiring suppliers in other countries. The staff also offers a strong technical support system for its members. The only problem is that their listing does include a mix of middlemen and wholesalers. It is a bit difficult to determine which is which but if you do know your product and are aware of the actual market prices, it would probably be just a matter of determining which ones appear to be overpriced. Being new in the business at that time, the eBooks and software tools were also quite helpful; same with the online forums where more experienced sellers would sometimes share their knowledge.

All in all, I would say that the benefits do outweigh the costs, particularly if you are a newbie. It does reduce your risks, especially in terms of delivering good quality products; however, it does not guarantee the lowest prices. Given this, it is still essential that you do not pin all your hopes in Salehoo. You can, however, still trust it to give you a good insight into the industry.
