Act. That is what you must do if your retail business is failing. The longer you leave the situation untouched the greater the risk of you losing control of your business and what may happen to it.

By act, I mean, take control of the situation.

Here are some simple yet vitally important steps you ought to take if you feel that your retail business is failing.

Understand.

Get the facts on what is happening for it is these facts which will guide your next steps. Is the business failing because of lack of sales, poor margin, poor foot traffic or high overheads. Make sure that you understand which of these is the problem, or which combination is the cause.

Bring in experts to get to the facts. An accountant would be a good start. Then a retail expert for an unemotional view on your business and where you are at.

As your customers what they think.

Listen to all of these opinions but come back to the facts.

Get lean.

While you get to the bottom of why your business is failing, take immediate steps to trim the business. Consider:

Reducing employee hours.

Discretionary spending.

Rent - talk to your landlord.

Inventory. Buy only what is selling. If you take on a new product line, quit something else.

Refresh.

Get creative inside your business. Create fresh product displays. Give the business a spruce up. Create a wonderful and enticing new window.

Let your employees know that the business is not in good shape, ask for their suggestions, act on those which you can easily implement.

Look for ways to present your retail store to your local community in a different way.

Fix the problem.

Once you have the facts s to why the business is failing, have the guts to fix the problem.

If it is poor traffic, look for ways to creatively and within budget find new traffic.

If it is poor margin, look for products you can sell which will carry a better margin.

If it is high overheads, take a dispassionate view on these. Work with the suppliers on these, your landlord, your product suppliers and service providers.

If it is poor sales, take a good hard look at the business. Why is it than you cannot convert customer traffic to sales. Get serious about your business and either increase your conversion rate or quit the business altogether.

Your success at fixing a retail business which is failing comes down to you understanding why the business is failing and you having the commitment and resources necessary to address the causes of the failure.

Commitment is the key as you may need to turn your back on some aspects of the business. If customers are not engaging then there is no point in sticking to a product line or a service. Retail businesses rely in fulfilling needs.

It could be that you need to educate customers about the need. This is where thinking outside the square could be appropriate - developing ways of making your business and its products and services more appealing than they have been in the past.

Don't give up. Work on, in and with your business. If you have a sound business plan then trust this and fix what needs fixing. ten, people see a problem and run scared. That dooms you to failure.
