The icons used in many IM programs like AOL Instant, Yahoo Messenger and MSN Messenger are referred to as buddy icons. These images can be of any kinds of formats like BMP, XBM, GIF, ICO or GIF and these images are usually found in 50*50 pixels.

These icons can be in the form of still animation or animation. Regardless of the kind of images, the size of these icons is usually not more than 7160 bytes. The first IM program to have used icons is the AOL Instant Messenger and some people refer to these icons as buddy avatars.
