If you are a member of the card carrying, flag waving affiliate marketing club, then I’m sure this article will trouble you somewhat. This article is based on a comment made by a very successful online marketer who was contributing to a discussion that was going on in an internet marketing forum.
The topic that was being talked about was whether product creation or affiliate marketing was best. There were advocates on both sides, as you’d expect.
Like most people, when I first started out, I struggled for a number of months, and was about to quit, so I know exactly what you’re going through if you’re currently struggling.
However, the most significant part of the entire discussion was when a highly successful marketer made his contribution to it. In this article I will refer to him as Ian. If you’re someone who has been in the internet marketing world for some time now, then it’s likely you’d know who he was if I were to mention him by his real name.
Ian basically spoke about how he had paid out a large five figures in commission the previous month. This meant that his affiliates had made so many sales that he had to pay out at least $10,000 in commissions. From this we could theorise that his earnings were in excess of $20,000 if we consider his commissions were at 50%.
With sales figures as high as that and the fact that this guy uses his own name as in the forum, this means he has a great amount of credibility.
So I paid close attention to everything that he had to say, which when put into my own words was:
The vast majority of product owners would prefer it if you focused solely on marketing, because it’s their products that you’ll ultimately promote.
Product owners don’t like the idea of competition, that’s why they have a tendency to encourage promoting their products instead of your own products.
From the things that he said you can see that there’s nothing in there that’s best for you.
Ian also noted that all the highest earning affiliates have their own services or products that they sale. So, that’s something for you to think about.
Remember, this is a real business and with all real business, they take time to grow. If you expect to make large sums of money within 24 hours, then you will be disappointed. If you would like to build a six figure income, then you must be willing to put in the time required.
