Promoting local shows, from bluegrass to dubstep to heavy metal to rock & roll is the kind of job that requires a person to keep their finger on the pulse of the people. Where they go, what they are interested in, how the demographics break down. If you promoted local events only by appealing to people who had attending similar events in the past, you would probably get a good showing, but that wouldn't be inclusive of all the people who would actually be interested in attending the event. Besides that, when promoting events such as local festivals, there is a wider range of attractions that bring people in. It might be the music, it might be the vending, for some people it might just be getting out and about. If you find the broadest possible range of attendees and bring them together to create successful events for your clients, you're likely to stay in business.

In the past, the main forms of advertisement and publicity for such shows was through media ads and promotions, usually radio and print publications and through one's street team. These are both still effective means of promoting a show and have by no means fallen by the wayside where still applicable. If the band playing local shows gets a lot of airtime on the radio, then that is a good bet for finding the listeners and letting them know that there is an upcoming show they don't want to miss. On the other hand, there are plenty of genres of music that aren't getting airtime, and plenty more reason to seek out a broader audience.

One of the newer ways that has quickly become nearly necessary is to utilize online social media to get the word out. Of course, you can do a lot better than just creating pages on social media sites by engaging with event promotion sites that bring a community together with not only the big picture but also with individual member's calenders. Using a site that allows members to share their calenders not just on that site but also on their own social media pages is where it really begins to work for you because this means that people will actually be doing the promotion for you. Word of mouth has always been one of the biggest, best and easiest ways to advertise, and it will probably remain so for many years to come. The only difference now is that word of mouth also happens via the Internet. Taking advantage of this as an event promoter is crucial to achieving great success and allowing the natural wave of excitement to carry the good news further.
