Planning a wedding is a great deal of work and requires a great deal of forethought, planning, and coordination- which takes time. Starting early is generally one's best bet, unless your wedding preference is an informal courthouse wedding, or running off to Vegas. Western-theme weddings are becoming increasingly more popular and a top choice, especially for those who desire to incorporate an aspect of their culture. Many western wear filled weddings or receptions take place outdoors, and in natural settings of beauty and nature. They may take place on farms- both family and rentals or in a favorite scenic spot- many state and national parks will allow weddings, make sure to call in advance. Once you have a location and a date, sending out invitations is the next step. Fun casual invitation ideas include dressing the bride and groom up in old-fashioned western wear, similar to the old time portraits that are popular in Western tourist spots, or using wanted poster style invitations along with your wedding party all dressed up with guns and cowboy boots. Formal invitations will likely utilize decorative aspects of the design to indicate the theme. A classic western element could be an embossed silver or gold rope, horse-shoes, cowboy boots, or any other decoration or design aspect you like the best.

Formal western apparel for the wedding party is par for the course in a western theme wedding, and one of the most talked about wedding elements is the bride's dress. A classic look would certainly be a white wedding dress, especially one with antique lace patterns. Fringe is also commonly seen on western wedding dresses. Of course, for a rather different look there is also the denim wedding dress. These dresses (made of soft lightweight denim, of course) can be as simple or as elaborate as you can imagine. Full trains and beading are certainly available in denim as well as on more traditional looking wedding gowns! Just with contemporary wedding dresses, the sky is the limit, because even if you don't find what you want, you can always have custom dress made with the exact classic or modern western elements for today's western bride. Wedding boots are commonly worn under a dress as well, and they also come in many styles and varieties. These might be old-fashioned heeled boots, delicately heeled white boots, or even a pair of white cowboy boots. The style of boot worn is usually informed by the style of dress, and of course the bride's personality. There is also a large variety and selection when it comes to the men in the wedding party, and the groom or course, with plenty of cowboy formal designs to choose from there is something for everyone involved to look and feel great.

There are several different themes within the category of "western" that you can choose to incorporate from when designing a western wedding, western is a general theme that you can find many more specific elements to concentrate on for your individual ceremony and reception. Examples might be a rustic theme pulling strongly from the natural landscape and re-purposed farm or ranching equipment with simple apparel that has a natural, simple design or a vintage western theme pulling more of it's decorative theme from antiques and traditional imagery with the apparel being more antique designs and styles, you could also choose a western theme that is based around horses more, using horses as transportation, barn type reception, more of a community gathering. In choosing which direction to go, western apparel lovers usually rely on their own tastes or heritage. If you grew up on a horse farm, chances are there will be a lot more cowboy and horse imagery, those who spent time in the desert might work with that imagery more with cactus centerpieces and so on. Often it is the little details that charm guests at a wedding, such as wedding favors that could include miniature pails with favors inside, cowboy boot shape vases with live flowers, cowbells as name tags for seating arrangements, or anything else you can think up that guests can take home as a great reminder of your unique wedding. These small touches go a long way in pulling a theme together as well- every piece counts! Take the elements in western apparel and culture that you are drawn to- it's your western wedding, so make it your western fantasy too!
