Hydrogen peroxide is a chemical that is made from both oxygen and hydrogen. This chemical is commonly used to bleach textile, paper, and is also used as an disinfectant in the household, medical field and also a key ingredient used to whiten ones teeth. Typical levels of concentration that you are likely to encounter hover around the 3% mark, while it can go as high as 10%. To put it simply, the more peroxide, the more effective the whitening product is.

The side effects of it

Because hydrogen peroxide is a very strong chemical, two fairly common side effects as a result of using it are gum and mouth irritation, plus increased teeth sensitivity, to temperature; however, the good thing is that these side effects are only temporal. Hydrogen peroxide is very effective because of its ability to penetrate your teeth’s enamel, interacting with the pulp and dentine aspect of your teeth. Many studies on the subject say that the process does not harm your enamel in any way and is considered safe by the American Dental Association.

Carbamide Peroxide

Carbamide and hydrogen peroxide should not be mixed up with one another, because they are different. Hydrogen is a very fast reacting chemical that has a relatively short life cycle. When you mix it with saliva and oxygen, the hydrogen peroxide begins to break down quickly whitening the teeth in the process. Carbamide peroxide on the other hand was created to intentionally slow the entire process down, that way preventing decomposition so that the peroxide lasts significantly longer providing you with better teeth whitening effects, that last longer.

What isn’t affected?

Hydrogen peroxide is unable to change the colour of porcelain teeth, filings, gold teeth, ceramic teeth or other materials; this is because the hydrogen is unable to penetrate the surfaces of these specific materials.
