Everyday, we come in contact with strangers, such as the person delivering office supplies to our places of business and the person who serves us at a restaurant. Most of them have minimal effect on our lives and are forgotten as soon as our transactions with them conclude. However, every once in a while, these people may begin to play a greater role in our lives. They may be prospective employees or even casual romantic relationships that we want to transition into deeper ones. Unfortunately, you have only to watch the news or read the paper to know that not everyone is honest and at worst may even be a form of predator. It is because of this that background checks have become a big business. People want and need to know exactly who it is that they are dealing with.

Prior to the Internet, people who wanted this type of service had to rely on expensive private detection agencies, which charged by the hour. Thanks to the World Wide Web, now this information can be ordered online, with the results being delivered at astonishing speeds. There are various types of reports available, with the prices for them based on the type of report being requested. Many companies use the agencies to do criminal and credit background checks on prospect employees.

The greater the position being filled, the more extensive the report being requested will be. These reports are also done by prospective investors on the key personnel of the business they are considering investing in, such as the CEO and other upper level management employees. A recent growth in this field can be attributed to people doing background checks on dating partners. Many people meet online, which can open the door to being preyed upon by people who are not what they represent themselves to be.

The companies that supply these online reports are discreet and respect the confidentiality of their clients. Most of the information they obtain are the result of searching public records. Many of these records are now automated and available online, which provides the company with easy access to them. Truly personal information such as social security numbers and bank records are not given in the reports.

As technology becomes greater, so does the potential for being victimized by people who use technology for nefarious purposes. While rare, people can set up false identities and use them to prey upon the uninformed. Many banks now run a credit and background check to make sure that potential employees don't have a criminal background and to ensure that customers applying for accounts pay their bills on time and don't have a history of writing bad checks. As time goes on, the need for these reports will become greater and may eventually become a regular part both our business and personal lives.
