A student letting agent is an organisation that arranges accommodation for students. There is always a need among students for a place to stay when they are attending a course of study at an academic institution such as a university or a college. Some students may not need accommodation if they already live near the college, but this will apply to a minority of the student population at an academic establishment. Of the students who are looking for a place to stay, some will prefer to have their own private facilities. Other students will prefer to share a house with other students for the sense of camaraderie that sharing brings.

A good student letting agent will aim to find suitable residential properties that are owned by good landlords. The agency will therefore concern itself with efficiency and quality. To avoid problems, the agency will do its best to ensure that it deals with reputable landlords only. The agency will be able to deal with students who register as a group and want to share together. The agency will also be able to accommodate a student who wishes to live in a shared house but does not yet have house-mates to live with.

One type of student letting agent is the kind of agency that is operated as part of a student organisation such as a student union. The office of a student letting agent will normally be located in the offices of the student union which will in most cases be found on the university or college campus. This means that it will be easy for the students to maintain a dialogue with the office if there is anything to discuss regarding their search for a residential property. One example would be if the student's search for a place to stay is not going smoothly.

If a student needs to make use of the services of the student letting agent, they will have to register their details with the agency. The agency will then be able to send the student details of properties that become available that suit the requirements that they have specified. These details will normally be sent out by email so that the students have the information as quickly as possible. The student will then be in a position to be able to review what types of residential properties are on offer for what price and in what location. They can then make arrangements to go and see the property if they wish to.

To get the best out of a student letting agent, it is important that a student specifies what they are looking for correctly. So they need to say how far from the college or university they would like to live. They would also need to specify whether they would prefer to share a house with other students, or to have their own private facilities. They would also need to specify how close they would need to be to public transport services such as train stations, underground stations and bus routes.
