After receiving that engagement ring, the wedding dresses trails closely in second place. The wedding dresses are symbolic of the ceremony in the eyes of many women. Wearing these dresses has become a tradition for many years now.
Before the 1900s
For the longest time, the wedding dresses that were worn by women were seen as their best dresses. During the medieval times, women would wear wedding dresses that were created from silks, fur and satins from a number of colours. The larger assortment of colours displayed on the dresses was indicative of the family’s wealth. These dresses also coordinated with the jewellery worn by the bride. Queen Victoria in the 1840s can be credited for making the white wedding dress the standard. Before her, it wasn’t unusual to see dresses made in black. Since that time however, most wedding dress that you find today are in white.
1900 to 1949
When we look at the 20th century, we find that the wedding dresses of those times reflected fashion trends, for example, in the 1930s, the cut of downs became fashionable, whereas in the 1920s short gowns that had dropped waists were very popular.
The 1950s
During this period the tea length gowns were very popular. These dresses fall between the ankle and knee, and come with a hoop which is under the skirt, decorated with sequins and pearls. The material used to create these dresses was usually satin and silk. It wasn’t unusual to see these dresses in ivory and cream, as oppose to the usual white coloured dress.
The wedding dresses that we see today have tended to fluctuate in style over the years. Different fashion elements are used during the design of modern wedding dresses. In conclusion, many people aren’t afraid to try something new for that special day of theirs.
