Train Your Dog to Not Jump on People

A lot of people inquire, "Can I actually teach my dog not to jump on others?" It is in fact a very frequent problem that affects plenty of dog owners. We may not mind the dog jumping on us, and in truth a lot of people like it if their dog makes a big fuss of them after they arrive home from work. However, there are times when we do not want our dogs to jump on strangers, people that are visiting or fragile pieces of furniture.

Dogs jump on people for two reasons.

The primary is a salutation. When your mutt jumps up on you in this manner you may not care it and, in reality may like it, but you really need to prevent this form of behavior as part of his training. Instead, you might encourage a greeting where you get down to the dog's level so he won't jump and maybe let him lick you or give him a pat on the head. That will prevent him needing to leap on you.

The other explanation that dogs leap on people is to affirm themselves and make the person submit. This is the comportment that the majority of people aspire to prevent when we are asking how to train my dog not to jump.

You will first have to teach the dog a command, either Off or Down. Say this firmly and be prudent not to reward the dog with teasing consideration or laughter.

An additional possibility is to give the dog the opposite response to the positive love and affection that he is expecting. For example, while telling the "off" or "down" command to your dog you could seize his front paws and put him firmly down on the floor. You can do the same when he jumps on furniture. You have to train your family members to be consistent with this training so that your pooch continually gets the same message every time.

Alternatively, when he jumps on you, do not touch him but show your teeth in a snarl. This can be extremely useful with a pup because it is what his mother would do. It is not terrifying for the puppy as long as you do it silently, but it shows him who is the leader.

When I worked to train my dog to not jump up on others I ran into a quandary as I discovered that most people automatically respond positively when a sociable dog jumps up on them. This is particularly accurate with a pup or a small dog. Most adults welcome it and will also fool around with the dog or laugh or speak to him in a friendly manner. Even if you let them know about the training, for the most part, people don't want to say "off" or "down" as they enjoy the attention or don't want to appear terrified of a little dog.

Because of this reason you may perhaps want to describe to friends and frequent visitors what you are doing. Give explanation to them that while your dog is still a puppy that he will be growing into a very large dog that they should not love him jumping up on them and knocking them over later on. Kids can be scared by little dogs and muddy, soiled pet dogs are maddening to anybody when they decide to jump up and say hello. Thus this truly is something that you want to educate your pooch not to do.

Once your family and friends realize the importance of it, it is usually much more convenient to get their assistance in the training of your dog. I realized this worked well if I explained to my friends that I needed to train my dog not to jump so that he will not scare strangers and kids.
