There aren't that many styles of dress that still appear to be as similar to their earlier incarnations as western apparel, with the possible exception of clergy and ceremonial dress. Robed figures aside, western wear looks much the same today as it did when it first became popular for one main reason: it was designed for function and the clothing continues to be worn today with some of the same activities on the docket. Another reason it may have longevity is that this clothing style is also one that comes with a certain philosophy of life, one with strong morals and traditions, and a history that continues to be useful to members of that culture are today.
The basic functionality aspects of western wear are, frankly, designs that don't need any improving. Cowboy boots for example, haven't seen much change over the years because they were specifically designed for for the needs of a rider. They are designed first and foremost for safety by protecting the leg from trail hazards, ensuring the best possible footing in the stirrup, and of course being able to pull off in case a rider is thrown or gets their boot tangled. Boots aren't the only item that have this safety feature, either. Those snaps on western wear shirts, whether plain metal or pearl snaps, come from the same principle: were a cowboy's shirt to get caught on barbed wire or a fence, it would be to his advantage to have the shirt actually be able to pull free in case of this happening in such a way that his life could be endangered were he to become stuck.
Not that you need any further proof how how well western wear reflects the history of the culture and activities it came out of, but the yokes that you see on western wear shirts are representative of the very yokes worn on the shoulders of the oxen that pulled wagons across this vast territory, carrying settlers and supplies. Decorative aspects remain much the same today, with elaborate stitching being the most common means of adorning western wear. You also see leather inlays on cowboy boots in a variety of shapes. There are some new aspects of western wear these days, such as printed shirts or shirts made of newer fibers (synthetics or blends). But when it comes right down to it, classics like denim and leather are still the most visible parts of western wear then and now.
