We all want to have a loving relationship that shows promise of being solid and long term. But relationships like that don’t just happen. They take work and a little give and take from both parties. Here are five tips to help you create and maintain a healthy and successful relationship.

First of all, be yourself. How many times have we tried to be someone we are not just to be accepted by someone else? Everyone has done it at one time or another. But eventually the relationship falls apart because you aren’t comfortable trying to pretend. A solid relationship requires honesty, and being comfortable in your own skin is being honest with yourself. Once you are comfortable with who you are, you are more likely to have a successful relationship.

Put your relationship first. So many relationships fail because it isn’t the first priority for either one or both of the parties involved. Don’t put careers, recreation, etc., before each other. Yes, there will be times when you have to do something extra for work, but don’t make a habit of it. If each of you feel you are the number one priority to the other person, you will feel more secure and loved.

Show appreciation to each other, even for the little things. Compliments and words of praise can really boost a person’s self esteem. When a person feels good about themselves they are happier and more content. In addition, when your partner knows that you pay attention to the little things, they will be more likely to be more loving toward you.

Have realistic expectations about your relationship. You wouldn’t cook a ham and expect it to take like beef right? Well, the same holds true for relationships. You both know where you are at in your lives and so your expectations of the relationship should reflect that. If your partner is still in college or just starting out in their career, don’t expect a big house and a fancy car. So many relationships fall apart because they don’t live up to the high expectations the couple had. Look at your lives realistically and talk about your goals for the future together. If you set goals together you will both have something to work toward and look forward to.

Don’t let little things become big things. So many people dwell on the small things until they get blown out of proportion. If you let a little thing bother you long enough, you will start seeing other things that bother you and soon it will get out of control. This is not healthy for a relationship. Realize that everyone has differences. That is what makes life so interesting. So let it go or talk about it and then let it go. Life is too short to waste it with silly arguments.

A loving and solid relationship is something to treasure. If you both work these five simple steps you will be on your way to a healthy partnership that will bring you happiness for years to come.
