Leaders Are The Best Teachers
When a management consulting firm conducted a study a few years ago, they fashioned two groups of folks to be trained in new systems and processes. One group was trained by skilled trainers. For the second cluster, the professionals trained the boss and the boss trained the people. Immediately once training, both groups were tested to see how well they'd learned.
That cluster tested higher? Well, um, uh, well, it was the professionally trained group.
Wait a second, there's more. The same testing was conducted six months later. Guess what? The retention of the fabric was a lot of higher for the group trained by their own boss.
If you think regarding it, neither result ought to surprise you. Unless a boss could be a terribly gifted teacher, he or she won't be as effective as a skilled trainer. The professional trainer, however, will not be hanging around when the formal training ends. The boss will reinforce the coaching materials, and can ensure they are applied on the job.
Teaching, and specifically leader led teaching, is an important and usually overlooked change management concept.
You Can Do It
1st of all, if you are in an exceedingly leadership position, you are already a teacher. Every day you're guiding people in the expectation that they will think for themselves and apply your steerage in their jobs. (If you're telling them what to do, you are not a leader -- a lot of sort of a supervisor).
Granted, there is a distinction between commonplace steerage and formal teaching. Even if you're not a great speaker or do not enjoy the formal classroom setting, simply suppose concerning a number of your qualifications:
You know the topic matter
You know the scholars
You have got a vested interest in their success
You've got a passion for what you're going to show (hopefully!)
These are benefits that are going to outweigh any limitations you've got as a result of not being a trained instructor.
Some Tips to Help You Succeed as a Teacher
Commit the Time - When you're teaching your workers, you have the posh of spreading the coaching out, perhaps a pair of hours per day for per week instead of an avid day and a half. Select it, however whatever time on whatever days you schedule for training, follow it. Don't cancel, and don't allow interruptions to the training schedule.
Teach, Don't Preach - Your goal is to share information and enable folks to use it. Help people perceive what's in it for them as you address what's changing.
Ask Queries - It is a nice manner to test understanding, for you and your students.
Invite Dialogue - That is what asking questions can do. Your job gets easier when the students are discussing what's being taught. You only must step in after they get stuck.
Repetition - Modification management concepts need to be repeated in order to be absorbed. In other words, change management ideas would like to be repeated so as to be absorbed. Enough said.
Practice Ego Sacrifice - You are not a skilled instructor, and you will find you're struggling with teaching sure things like technical concepts. Bear in mind that it's the future results that build you the right alternative for this particular job, and be willing to let your students recognize that you would like their help at times.
