Family lawyer Martin Loxley said:"Although the bulk of people who contact a lawyer with marital issues go on to divorce their partner at some stage, we have seen an increase in the number marriages saved through relationship counselling and therapy."
In 2008, the divorce rate in England and Wales decreased by 2.5 per cent to 11.five divorcing folks per 1,000 married people, compared with 11.8 in 2007, figures from the National Office for Statistics showed.
The 2008 divorce rate in England and Wales was the lowest since 1979, when there have been 11.two divorces per one,000 married people, prompting analysts to recommend that this could be the results of higher relationship counselling
But, Sue Terry from the Bournemouth-based mostly relationship counselling service New Horizons said that though the figures seemed to be positive they were in all probability not representative of the truth for families.
“These figures solely relate to couples who have truly tied the knot over the last thirty years, and in that point we have a tendency to became abundant additional tolerant as a society of partners co-habiting outside marriage.” She said.
“I am delighted that some commentators are suggesting that relationship counselling has caused this improvement, but we have a tendency to ought to be very cautious in how we interpret this news."
“I would terribly much like to understand how several serious relationships where couples are co-habiting have failed throughout the same amount - that will give us a so much more accurate picture of the state of individuals’s relationships.” She added.
A recent survey by the link counselling organisation Relate showed that eighty per cent of respondents, who wanted to avoid wasting their relationship, felt that relationship counselling had helped.
