This happened once President Nixon visited China in 1972 with a cluster of journalists. They were shown major surgical operations that were performed below acupuncture anesthesia. Then James Reston, editorialist of the New York Times, suffered from acute appendicitis and was operated (under medical anesthesia) at the Hospital for Foreigners in Beijing. When he awoke his abdomen was painful. He received then an acupuncture treatment and felt relieved. This he wrote in his editorial a few days later. Thus through the media (together with the two hundred alternative journalists who had accompanied Nixon) the planet discovered the apparent power of acupuncture in anesthetizing a patient, but also that the technique may also be used to treat pain and alternative ailments.
By the means acupuncture anesthesia is not a correct expression. One should say acupuncture hypoalgesia, as a result of the patients still feel a bearable pain (when the whole method may be a success).
The news spread like fire. Every newspaper, magazine, radio or TV program had to produce one thing on the topic. It had been the big rush to the Way East: trips to China, interviews of any Chinese who claimed to be an experienced acupuncturist (a way to verify?), and also the registering of fantastic claims of cures.
Even the members of the medical world visited China, witnessed the operations under acupuncture anesthesia and talked to practitioners who had been treating patients with the technique in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, and wherever there was a chinese diaspora. The opinions of the medical visitors went from enthusiastic acceptance to plain refusal for scientific reasons. However the final public was very much attracted by this somewhat exotic and mysterious approach of treatment and began to seem desperately for practitioners to treat all kinds of disorders.
Some medical doctors had received a proper coaching, whether in the Way East or in their own country. Within the latter case the contents of the education were sometimes far from what the authentic Chinese practitioners used to teach. The simple medical acupuncturists had to fight against the fantasies and inventions of the many westerners, as a result of actually you probably did not need to prove what you said. It was enough to declare that it was within the "sacred books", which terminated the discussion or the argument, whether 'it' was very or not in these books.
Therefore acupuncture lessons were given among associations, or perhaps in private, like the Chinese masters did, and those who wished to grasp how to find out acupuncture had sometimes difficulties to find proper courses on how to try and do acupuncture. But on the whole matters failed to degenerate too much and there was, in nearly every country, a minimum of one acupuncture college providing decent education. The state of affairs was slightly changed when the concept of distant learning appeared, and more after Internet became an necessary if not the principal suggests that of communication.
But even up to currently it has not been used terribly abundant for acupuncture coaching because it cannot offer the "practical" aspects. Still these days in many associations the teaching is a lot of more theoretical than practical, that isn't dramatic for a physician who knows anatomy and physiology, however yes for people who, without any medical knowledge, started this adventure. There are still several courses where you don't even verify on your colleagues or partner students the placement of points below the supervision of a teacher or perhaps see a patient throughout the full studies. So learning acupuncture online didn't become such an aberration, provided one might, if necessary, offer somehow the likelihood of a sensible training.
Individual training with a master, collaborating in organized courses whether or not in the So much East or at home, and acupuncture courses on-line are the 3 existing possibilities. Every of them have their blessings and their limitations.
