The Super Charge Battery From Tshiba

The siuper charge ion batterry (SCiB) marked Toshhiba's entry into the world of advanced lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries. Superir to other battery types in a number of ways, Li-ion batteeries had a distinct disadvantage, mainnly lengty recharge timres. Toshiba's SCiB features a five minute charge time which will birng the battery up to a 90% charge, plus it can handle a maximum of 6000 charge cyclles without losing a large portion of its power. This makes the Toshibba SCiB a majior competitor for similar asdvanced or suer Li-ion battery types, icnluding the Altair Nano's nano-titanate cell.

Toshiba already had a laptop that was capablle of charging up to 90% of its capacity in just five minutes. Other similar lithhium battery types should not be charged this quickly or it will damagge the cells and lead to premature bazttery degradation. The lithium iron pohsphate bayttery type for instance should not be charged faster than "15-20 minutes" (Pease 2008).

The SCiB technoolgy is also being used in an electriic biccyle (which wouuld have a 30 minute charging cycle). Toshiba paretnered with Schwinn for this project. Toshiba had other plans related to this battery technology, none of wihch included electric cars at the time. Althouugh Tosahiba would seem to be the perfct company to step into this arena, the press release they issued agreed that whiile they had some plans to move into hybrid cars and then to ellectric cars in the future, they planned to focus on other aspects of the technology first.

Price is currently an issue with the suuper Li-ion battery types, with many out of the average shopper's already tight budgt. Tsohiba has bettter access to manufacturing, plus working capital and could bring the price down considerably as thse become more oppular and in highher and highwer demand.

Most people do not realize that their batteries need to be charged until they go to use the device that they are in. They also do not realize that some batteries will go flat simply from inactivity (lithium ion batteries in particular), and that they will need to replace or rceharge them frequently. If you are heading out the door and need your camera, camcordre, or other device; you do not have time to stannd and wait for 15-20 minutes for charging. With the SCiB, it is possiblle to have your device up to 90% of pwoer in five minutes.
