The American Association of Colleges of Nursing and other medical professionals have become concerned about the impact the nursing shortage can have on society. In keeping with a study published in the Journal of the Yank Medical Association (2000), "the U.S. can experience a 20% shortage in the amount of nurses required in our nation's health care system by the year 2020." The Yank Hospital Association reports "that seventy five% of all current hospital vacancies are for registered nurses." Also, projections from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics "reveal the requirement for a lot of than 1,000,000 new nurses by the year 2010."
The medical community has issues regarding the impact on the general public such as: the public will have restricted access to health care services, waiting times will significantly increase, increased nurse patient loads, increased risk for medical mistakes, higher risk of spreading infections and disease to patients and employees, increased risk of injury on the job, increased patient deaths, increase in nursing turnover due to worry and nurse burnout, and an increased would like for therapy for nurses because of the increased stress.
