I recently visited one early childhood centre that was concerning to implement their 'college readiness program' once the youngsters's lunch. The children were lined up at the door and also the teacher was holding a few stencils with the letter 'A' in bubble writing (presumably for the children to color in). The teacher leaned over and said to me "we tend to're learning the letter A in the week and we are operating our method through the alphabet".
What does this truly mean..."we're learning the letter A"? How is this enriching the language skills of the children within the program? What should we tend to be wanting for within early childhood programs that lays a smart learning foundation and supports kids in having a positive experience in their first years of school? I would really like to outline 3 areas of kid development and suggest some of the foundations we ought to be looking to support and encourage within a child previous to and during their faculty experience.
Social Competence
Our learning programs ought to help to get the foundations for :
o Independence and self help skills
o Positive social interactions and the power to make and sustain friends
o Self expression and confidence to speak desires and ideas
o Sharing and turn taking
o Entering and leaving individual and cluster play things absolutely
o Understanding and following routines and managing routine changes
o A capability to remain attentive and work in a group setting
o Respect for others
o Empathy and seeing other views
Language Competence
Our learning programs ought to encourage youngsters to perceive:
o Language may be a communication tool
o Language can be fun and creative
o Language encompasses several aspects such as verbal, written, and body language
o Principles of symbols and shapes (letter forms)
o The importance of effective listening
o Hearing and identifying variations in language sounds
Cognitive Competence
Our learning programs ought to support the foundations of :
o Confidence in trying new skills and making makes an attempt at learning
o A thirst or energy for learning
o A capability to assume creatively and downside solve
o Good memorization and memory recall
o Attentiveness and concentration
o Listening skills
These are the abilities we ought to be supporting and developing in kids after we are getting ready them, not only for school, except for life long learning. If these foundations are not laid, it can be more durable for children to find out a way to scan, how to write, and to perceive maths and science concepts. Just keep in mind that the tallest, brightest skyscraper won't stand for long unless it's good solid foundations.
In our preschool and early childhood services, calling a program 'faculty readiness' is simply a flowery term if all it includes is further sheets and stencils that older kids do whereas younger children are having their daytime rest or sleep. After all, we might decision it anything from 'College Preparation' to 'Kindy Starters' to 'Prep Category' and it may 'Wow' our parents and educators. But if the principles behind it aren't concerning laying learning foundations throughout our whole everyday activities, then they're all a waste of time and fancy words. Build sure your preschool or long day care centre's preparation for faculty learning is additional than just a flowery term.
